Welcome to OwnFusion! We are excited to have you along for this journey.
What is OwnFusion?
OwnFusion is a completely free and open source virtualization platform with a focus on transparency and ease of use. We make server hosting on your own hardware a breeze. No forced connections to our servers, no data collection.
How does OwnFusion compare to other virtualization managers?
Most virtualization managers on the market right now can be quite overly complex. We made OwnFusion to make virtualization accessible to everyone, so ‘mortals’ can host their own cloud. We believe everyone should be able to have control of their data.
Why should I use OwnFusion?
You should use OwnFusion if you’re interested in self-hosting your own personal cloud (for example Nextcloud), or maybe even a game server. We make OwnFusion very easy to manage, it mostly manages itself with automatic updates. Anyone should be able to easily use OwnFusion, regardless of their technical abilities.
Is there a way for me to support OwnFusion financially?
Yes, we are almost entirety funded by donations, so we’d love your help! We accept donations over Liberapay and Bitcoin. More information on how funds are used and why you should donate are in the description on Liberapay.
When will OwnFusion be released?
We are working hard to get OwnFusion out to you, we expect to have an alpha version ready mid-2026, with a beta version by the beginning of 2027. Both the alpha and the beta will be completely free to download and use, along with the full release. You should be able to update from an alpha or beta version to the full release as well.
What is OwnFusion based on, how is it made? (Technical Question)
OwnFusion is an independent Linux-based operating system built on musl. We use the dinit init system, which we like for it’s simplicity. Podman is used for both apps and containers. QEMU is used for virtualization, and the web UI is made with the JetZig framework. The frontend app does nothing on it’s own, it relies entirely on the API for all functionality. We believe this is important so people can easily build their own custom apps wrapping around the OwnFusion API, along with any official apps we may provide in the future. Custom apps are very much allowed and encouraged. The API is made in the Zig programming language, which is similar to the C programming language.
